Camping in Ontario, Canada
Below is a quick review of our 4 favourite campgrounds in Ontario
Killbear Provincial Park
Site: 516 Harold Point & Site 16 Killcoursie
We absolutely LOVE Killbear. Set on the rocky Georgian Bay, this huge campground offers hugely rewarding sunrises, sunsets, beaches, jumping rocks. Just 2.5 hours north of Toronto, we love this little piece of heaven on earth so much that we came back just one month after our first visit. Chase chipmunks, gawk at the loons or just sit back and watch your campfire roar. This is definitely a busy campground and some of the sites can have challenging “undulations” being on the Canadian Shield. PLENTY of wildlife with bears common in the park (along with chipmunk, deer, loons, porcupines…)
Pros: clean beaches and water, clean and plentiful privies (flush outhouses), 3G cell phone service, location
Cons: busy, many uneven sites
Arrowhead Provincial Park
Site 372 – Pull-through Campground
Perched 10 minutes outside of the cute and quaint Muskoka town of Huntsville, Arrowhead 100% stood up to its reputation: a haven in the summer, and what sounds like an amazing place to ski, skate or snow show in the winter.
We got a last minute cancellation in a “Pull-through” site which are meant for motorhomes but our cute little Pop-Up fit right in and worked just fine for us. Each site in this campground appeared huge, very well treed and very private. If I were to return I would head to Roe campground as it is closest to the lake.
Pros: Large treed private sites, clean facilities, short hikes, clean lake
Cons: A lot of Poison Ivy
Grundy Lake Provincial Park
Site 313: Poplar Campground
Approximately 3 hours north on Ontario lies this provincial park made up of 4 small lakes Grundy, Gurd, Gut, and Clear Lakes. It is another huge park with plenty of private campsites and clean lakes. The loons pleasantly woke us each morning on our site which was adjacent to Gurd Lake.
Pros: Gorgeous lake, private sites, large campground
Cons: No cell phone reception or close-by groceries.
Summer House Park, William Lake
Site P23
We stumbled across this gem with friends who own a summer house in this family-oriented private campground. Providing a ton to do for the entire family with clean facilities, flat sites, a beautiful lake, Summer House Park is nestled 30 minutes either north to Tobermory or south to Lions Head. Undoubtedly, our highlight was the Lions Head lookout hike which was one of the most stunning views I have seen to date. The Grotto in Bruce Peninsula National Park was also spectacular but very, very busy.
Pros: Vicinity to local attractions, clean sites, some private sites some not, super easy check-in.
Cons: Pricey (for camping that is…) no grate on fire pits, busy, some sites private but some not so much
